Tightening the noose around errant hospitals and doctors in medical negligence cases, consumer forums across country have been coming down heavily upon such cases. In two separate cases recently, consumer forums have slapped fines amounting in lakhs in medical negligence cases.

In a landmark verdict, West-Bengal State Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum in Kolkata ordered two doctors and a leading cardiac hospital in Kolkata to pay compensation to the tune of Rs. 18 Lakhs for negligence which resulted in death of a 23 year old patient in 2005. The two doctors have been directed to pay additional litigation cost of Rs. 5 lakhs and the hospital to refund around Rs. ^ lakhs which were found to be wrongly charged.
